Ask the Code 42 CEO

We understand that not all of the questions you have relate strictly to the technicalities or capabilities of Code 42 data backup software. Where our frequently asked questions page and CrashPlan support desk are ideal places to receive answers to a CrashPlan query, sometimes it’s great to hear the answers straight from the top.

Therefore, in the mindset of continuing our dedication to the open lines of communication between the CrashPlan team and our users, we’ve decided to let you talk to the man behind CrashPlan.

Once a month, Code 42 CEO, Matthew Dornquast, will answer a user-generated question straight from our blog.  We encourage you to pose questions that have been plaguing your mind as they relate to everything from buzz around the industry water cooler to the future of CrashPlan.

CrashPlan users were recently interested in learning CrashPlan’s take on the existence of unlimited data backup and Matthew was happy to answer:

I heard you have plans for a small business solution. Care to elaborate on this? Right now from what I have read, your crashplan and crashplan+ products cant be uses for small businesses and your crashplan pro pricing is quite high for a small business. Especially when a lot of them dont even have a server. An IT consultant like me that serves mainly small businesses that have less than 20 staff members and maybe are just 1-5, are not actively being served by your current offerings, especially with the huge gap in pricing between your products and what the market is offering. What say you?

I would like to know if CrashPlan (Code 42) has any plans on opening a data center in Europe and if so is there any ETA on it?

Also I would like to know if CrashPlan plans on allowing customers to move between data centers by simply relocating their data within CrashPlan centers rather than re-uploading it. This could be great for redundancy and of course over coming those routing problems people are having.

Are there any plans for CrashPlan to support Rsync? Or are there plans to open the CP protocol, so that third party tools could be created?

I have a NAS box for which there is no CP client supported. It would be great if I could use Rsync or try to develop my own client (even without the online backup, I would be able to use the CP software to backup to the NAS).

I’d certainly love to see both small-business CP+ options and an upgraded datacenter (my upload rates to CP+ are abysmal right now, just a small fraction of my available upload speeds). I don’t know that opening a new presence in the UK would improve matters any more than adding that extra bandwidth to the US site would … at this rate, my first year’s subscription will be up for renewal before the first backup has completed!

Why is it so cost prohibitive for my business to backup our main file server to Crashplan Central when I can personally backup 2 or 3 times as much unlimited data for an affordable monthly rate?

  6. jtrpop June 07, 2011

Thank you for unlimited personal storage with no file type or size limits, or hidden bandwidth throttling, unlike other competitors. Any chance of online web access or upload to my backed up CrashPlan Central files, or even Android support?

What’s the best way to help other’s differentiate between Apple’s iCloud and CrashPlan. I know iCloud isn’t a true backup, but what are some good bullet points to make with the less tech-savvy for why CrashPlan is still important to backup music and photos?

I’ve tried Mozy, Carbonite and others… I like Crashplan but…

… are you likley to introduce an iPhone / Smartphone App?

In order to remotley access and manage backed up data, such an app would be a fantastic tool. Carbonite have the right idea, I’d love to see Crashplan get onboard with mobile apps.

    Any plans?

How do you feel about the way computers are heading (all cloud) with all the major players pushing it very aggressively and how do you see it affecting your business model?

  10. jciravol June 07, 2011

Alright. Here goes.. You know your product if fantastic.. so I won’t get into that.

Have you given any thought to reaching out to the under-served market of mobile device backup? I would love to see a way to backup these things. Maybe nice cross platform app. Giving you the option to backup to your existing crashplan locations.

As others have said.. Online access would rock! Keep up the good work!
